Those who receive the annual OCDA Distinguished Service Award are selected based on the following criteria:
- a high standard of musicianship.
- a high standard of professionalism.
- a record of service to choral music in Ohio.
- a record of active service to OCDA.
2010 OCDA Distinguished Service Award Recipient
Dr. Craig Johnson is Chairperson for the Department of Music at Otterbein University, where he has been on the faculty since 1980. He holds degrees from Northwestern University and the College-Conservatory of Music, University of Cincinnati. Dr. Johnson teaches Music Theory and other specialized courses in addition to his duties as Chairperson.Choirs under Dr. Johnson's direction have sung at conferences of the Ohio Music Education Association, the Ohio Choral Directors Association, the national conference of the Organization of American Kodaly Educators, and in a festival performance at the American Choral Directors Association Central Division Convention.He is also Director of Music at North Community Lutheran Church, Columbus, and is an active clinician and adjudicator. Dr. Johnson co-authored The Chorus in Opera: A Guide to Repertory. He is also an evaluator for the National Association of Schools of Music.

The Vice-President calls for nominations from the membership for the OCDA Distinguished Service Award each year in the fall issue of OCDA News.
Criteria for Nomination:
Nominations should include the following information:
Nominations should be sent no later than December 1 to the Vice-President. The Board’s decision is made at the January meeting and the award is given at the summer conference.
The Vice-President calls for nominations from the membership for the OCDA Distinguished Service Award each year in the fall issue of OCDA News.
Criteria for Nomination:
- The nominee must be a member in good standing of ACDA.
- Nominees should exemplify the following characteristics:
- a high standard of musicianship.
- a high standard of professionalism.
- a record of service to choral music in Ohio.
- a record of active service in OCDA.
- Nominees may come from any specialty, discipline, or teaching level within ACDA membership.
- Previous recipients of the award are excluded from further nominations.
Nominations should include the following information:
- Name of nominee
- Nominee's address (address, city, and zip)
- Nominee's phone and email address
- Nominee's areas of work: indicate Elementary, Middle/Junior High, Senior High, Two-year Colleges, College/University, Church, or Community
- Nominee's years of experience
- Statement in support of nominee
- Your name, phone number, and email
